Abstract : I examine here Dummett's views on inference in the light of Carroll's paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise. Various readings of the paradox are reviewed, and the one which is favoured is that the Tortoise questions the normative force of logical laws and rules. Dummett's analysis of the epistemology of understanding provides the ints of a solution to this problem, but it is agued that this solution is still incomplete.
